A spokeswoman at Brigham and Women’s Hospital confirmed the death this afternoon.
Sutcliffe’s passing added a tragic note to an already tearful morning in Plymouth, where a couple was killed in a dawn house-fire on the town’s north side. All day, family members of these victims – Eduardo and Maria Rosa Tavares, a Portuguese-American couple, ages 77 and 69 respectively – were grieving outside the fire at their Cherry Street home.
The fire at Sutcliffe’s home on South Meadow Road, near Carver, broke out just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Firefighters arrived to find Sutcliffe unconscious inside the flaming home, with severe burns on her upper torso and face. Paramedics rushed her to Jordan Hospital, and a short time later she was flown to the Boston hospital.
Since the fire, she had since been listed in critical condition.
Fire investigators determined the fire likely was sparked by an electrical malfunction. However, they did not rule out smoking as a possible cause, according to Jennifer Mieth, a spokeswoman for the state fire marshal’s office.
Sutcliffe had lived in the home for 15 years. Dorothy Urban, a neighbor and friend, said Sutcliffe was a nurse in the U.S. Army until she retired as a lieutenant colonel. She lived alone.
